Cover image: How much does brand identity design cost in India?

It's usually the first thing a founder asks us, often a little apologetically. There's no need. Here's a straight answer, our own price included, and what actually sits behind the number.

01

What does brand identity design cost in India?

Anywhere from a few thousand rupees to several lakhs, and occasionally far more. A logo from a freelance marketplace sits at one end. A large network agency sits at the other, often at many times our price. Both exist for a reason, and neither is automatically right for you.

Our brand strategy and identity projects start from ₹6.5 lakh. That isn't what we charge for a logo. It's what it costs to work out where a brand stands, how it sounds and how it looks, and then to write it all down so your team can use it without calling us every week.

02

A logo isn't a brand identity

A logo is one mark. An identity is the whole kit around it: versions of the mark for different sizes, a colour palette with rules, typefaces, a tone of voice, layouts, and guidelines that keep a pitch deck, a website and an Instagram grid looking like the same company.

That kit is where most of the cost goes, and most of the value. We've seen plenty of brands with a lovely logo and nothing around it. Within a year there are four slightly different versions of it in use and nobody's sure which one is right.

03

What drives the price of a brand identity

Four things, mostly.

How much strategy is needed. If your positioning is already sharp, we can get to design quickly. For most young brands it isn't yet, and that thinking is where the real work happens.

How many places the brand has to live. A consultancy needs a website, decks and documents. A food or beauty brand needs all that plus packaging across a range, shelf presence and social. Each one gets designed properly, not just stamped with the logo.

How deep the guidelines go. A two-page logo sheet and a brand book your team actually works from are very different things.

Whether it moves. If the brand has to live in reels, on a website or inside an app, the motion needs designing too. These days that's most brands.

“The cheapest identity is the one you only have to make once.”

WHAT WE TELL FOUNDERS
04

What you should get for the money

Whoever you hire, at identity level you should walk away with: a positioning you can say in one sentence; a mark that still reads at the smallest size it'll ever be printed, in one colour; a colour and type system with rules, not just swatches; real applications, designed rather than mocked up; guidelines a future agency could pick up; and editable source files that belong to you.

For Re-Search & Ignite, a research consultancy, we worked on both the website and the brand identity with its design system. Having one system behind everything is what keeps a deck, a site and a report looking like the same company. That's the point of doing it properly once.

05

When a cheaper logo is the smarter spend

If you're still testing an idea, a clean, simple logo and a decent landing page are enough. Put the rest of the money into finding customers. A full identity earns its cost when the brand has to scale: new products, new cities, a team creating with it every day, or retailers and investors judging you on it.

We'd rather say that on the first call than sell you something you don't need yet.

06

Questions founders ask us

How long does a brand identity take? It depends far more on decisions than on design time. Strategy and sign-off usually take longer than drawing.

Do I own the logo and files? You should, outright, including editable source files. Check this in any contract.

Can you just do the logo now and the rest later? Yes, if you're early. Just know that a logo designed without a system often gets redrawn when the system arrives.

07

How to budget for it

List every place the brand will show up over the next two years, from the smallest (a favicon, a jar lid) to the largest (a shop front, an event stall). Mark the ones that matter most to sales. Then ask every studio you talk to to price against that list, not against 'a logo'.

It's the quickest way to compare quotes fairly, and it makes the first meeting far more useful for both of you. If you'd like us to price against your list, tell us about the project. And if you're comparing studios, these nine questions to ask a design agency work for branding too.

08 · THE SHORT VERSION
  1. 1A logo and a brand identity are different things, so price them differently.
  2. 2Strategy, the number of applications, guideline depth and motion drive the cost.
  3. 3Expect a system, real applications, guidelines and source files you own.
  4. 4Our Brand Strategy projects start from ₹6.5 lakh.
  5. 5If you're still testing an idea, a simple logo is often the better spend.
